It's all about figuring out what your choices are and trying to make the right ones.

Isn’t (insert social media tool here) just for
Justin Bieber? Who uses it? Why would teachers use it? Who can see what I post? What if my students follow me? What if parents of my students follow me? What if my administration follows me??!! Why would anyone want to see what I post? How do you use it? How can I get something from using it? |

Not on social media yet? Try one. Go ahead. Just be yourself on it. Explore. Sit with a child and let him or her show you how to use it.
Once on social media, check out a hashtag. Not new to the tool? Explore a new hashtag, or create one for your school, class, or activity.
Show your students how to search using a hashtag. (Preview it first, or even take screen shots if you’re worried about inappropriate material.) If you find the right one, connect with classes who use this hashtag. This is the safest option - connecting with other classes can open up new worlds for you and your students!
If you’re still on the fence about using one of these tools, ask yourself why. What will you be sharing or possibly seeing? Talk with a friend about what they think about these tools. Then talk with more people to hear the different perspectives. Set a date a few months from now to once again consider using one of these tools in the future. They change so quickly, that maybe they will create new features so you can trust the tool a bit more. Then talk again with peers to hear their thoughts.

Even in my first tweet I was asking questions...!
I now use Tweetdeck ("how to" here) to manage my time on Twitter.
Our class joined the "Twittersphere" a year later!
My students started teaching me Instagram when I began using it...
